Calling the Synology DS112j a NAS server is a huge understatement. This box is so much more then a Network Attached Storage device. I could write about all of the features of this box, but it would take months to cover it all. I will cover the main features only – and still show that this box could cover about any server needs a home user would need. I will write this review from a home user perspective, and show why a regular PC/Mac/Linux user would like to invest in a NAS for the home network. The DS112j is a 1-bay NAS server which means that it fits one 3,5″ or one 2,5″ SATA disk drive (supporting the Max Internal Capacity of 4TB). This small box (Size (HxWxD) : 166 X 71 X 224 mm) can be stored away and will – if fitted with a quiet harddrive – not make to much impact in your livingroom or office. It is producing a background noise of only 17.2 dB(A) (which is whisper quiet, or even more quiet than that – depends who is whispering). One more sale-point in these fragile times is that this box is having a Power Consumption of 12.1W (Access) or 4.4W (HDD Hibernation), this is about the same power a lightbulb would use – you are saving the power-bill, the nature and even your data at the same time – you are – together with Synology – a hero!
The NAS is (when configured) easily installed by connecting it to the wireless/cable-based router that your ISP is handing you when you buy your internet connection from them. A network cable (CAT6) is enclosed with the DS112j NAS and is all you need to connect the device to the network.
